Arabesque: Designing & Illuminating Mamluk Patterns

Join VAWAA artist Ruba for a three part series to voyage into the medieval Mamluk decorative arts. Over 3 consecutive weeks, you'll learn how to create breathtaking Mamluk inspired patterns and then illuminate using the Tazhib (gilding) technique.

Mamluk period emerged in Egypt and Syria in the 12th century. Within a short time, Cairo, the Mamluk capital, became an economic, cultural, and artistic center of the Arab Islamic world with its majestic architecture and marvelous decorative arts. The opulence of Mamluk decorative arts – enameled and gilded glass, inlaid metalwork, woodwork, and textiles—are still prized around the Mediterranean as well as in Europe. The influence of Mamluk glassware on the Venetian glass industry is only one such example.

Starting Saturday 13th March, we'll meet weekly on zoom. Under Ruba's wise and enthusiastic guidance, you will learn to create harmonious Mamluk style designs, inspired by the natural world. You will learn how to create different radial designs and apply it do decorate ceilings, walls, doors, paintings or adornments. Then you will learn how to use the Tahzib (gilding) technique. 'Tahzib' is an Arabic word, derived from 'Zahab' meaning 'gold'. This illuminating technique is often used to detail the margins of books. You will be using it to beautify your designs with intricate form and color.

All levels are welcome. There will be plenty of time to discuss, share and get feedback.

What to expect

Session 1: Sat, March 13th 11AM - 1PM EST

An introduction to Mamluk Biomorphic designs. Gradually constructing the base geometry of the radial design by arraying sector, pausing between stages to allow for any improvement. Ruba will review designs before continuing onto the second session.

Session 2: Sat, March 20th 11AM - 1PM EST

Continue developing your motifs in the Mamluk style. Perfecting your final designs and transfer from tracing paper to palette paper.

Session 3: Sat, March 27th 11AM - 1PM EST

Using gold paint, you will learn the Tahzib (gilding) technique to adorn the design. You can introduce other colors such as blue, green, vermilion and turquoise.


What you'll need

First and second sessions

  • A compass
  • A ruler
  • Paper size A3 = 29.7 x 42.0cm, 11.69 x 16.53 inches
  • Range of Pencils (6B-4H)
  • Tracing paper
  • Eraser
  • Optional – Coloured pencils

Third session

  • High quality gouache paint - blue, green, turquoise, vermilion
  • Gold paint or pure gold
  • Natural brushes
  • Palette 
  • Paper for final artwork

About Ruba

Ruba is a Jordanian visual artist focused on biomorphic design, traditional Islamic art, and architecture. Growing up in an artistic household with an artist mother and father who was a talented Islamic vocalist, she crystallized her interest in traditional Islamic arts at an early age. Ruba studied traditional Islamic art and teaches biomorphic design, freehand drawing, and geometry at the Islamic art and Architecture Institute in Jordan. She has honed her skills learning from masters from several countries, including Turkey, England, India, Morocco and Egypt. She also works on miniature paintings, mosaics, illumination and abstract paintings with watercolor.
